Bulwark can withstand a barrage of assaults, it takes alot to bring this veteran down. His opponents do tire then one focused and powerful jab will usually do the trick. If this tactic fails, Bulwark will easily stand a few rounds toe to toe against the best of them.

Monster Fight!

Illustrate your entry in the Ultimate Monster Fight Challenge – any shape or form goes! Inter-dimensional, extraterrestrial, supernatural, it doesn't matter. Entries for the first official Monster Fight Challenge must be posted on the blog by end of day December 31st to be valid.

Entries must adhere to the following rules:

One hour drawing limit. Monster must be finished within 60 minutes. Any medium is acceptable – sketches are fine.
Monsters mustn't be larger or heavier then a large elephant (around 3 meters across the back and 5000kg). They must be 'material', and not ephemeral or energy beings (all entrants must all be able to 'hit' each other).
A Monster must be given a name by the creator.
The creator may give a one paragraph background description of the creature.
The creator can assign the Monster three key words to describe it's abilities. For instance, fast, savage, lean etc. Keywords may not include obvious exploits such as impervious, immortal etc.
More then one monster may be entered into the Monster Fight, but will be treated as separate entries in regard to fighting and advancing in the competition (They'll fight each other).
Each monster will fight each other, winners determined by a general office vote to be tallied. Ties for the most undefeated creature, or what is considered a valid keyword, will be judged by an impartial body, probably Admin.

Thanks to everyone who have contributed over the last few weeks! Guess what time it is? Time for a new art challenge!

~Art Challenge #3~
Produce a Character Concept, in any form, from the description below. This is for a side project being concocted - the game is a side scrolling shooter, like Blackthorne made by Blizzard back in the day.

The Demolitionist:

Stature/Look/Build:

Big (built, strong)
Alpha male type character (think Marcus Fenix from Gears of War/Marine from Star Craft II, Wolverine)
Bald, Beard
Carries a Shotgun
Tall 6 ft +

Dress/Demeanour:

Worn singlet
Worn black leather jacket, open (think Mad Max)
Tough look/serious composure
Anti-hero, every man for himself attitude

Options:

Scar on the face
Tattoo on the face

Background:

He’s been enslaved unjustly and he wants revenge, big time. He’s “found” himself a shotgun and a leather jacket and wants to get out of the prison that he’s been put into (a la Death Race 2000).

That's it - do with this as you will. This 'challenge' isn't a competition! It's a personal challenge, an opportunity for practice and to have a laugh. Your post can be as simple or finished as you like.

The Little Merman

*My late submission for Art Challenge #1 - Take a classic story or novel and add a twist. I'm jumping on the reversed-sex role bandwagon. Took me a while to post it... and it's not in colour! D:*

Story
The story starts exactly like The Little Mermaid; a young merman with a beautiful voice has a fascination for human artifacts. One fateful night he saves a human, Prince Eric, from a sunk ship; from then on he dreams of being with the humans. His father (the king) finds the human artifacts and shows his disgust by destroying everything his son loves. This sketch is after that moment when the little merman holds the broken face of the Prince's statue.

If the little merman peruses the Prince, will he find love? Will the sea witch use the little merman's stolen voice to command all of the Prince's attention? How would the prince treat the little merman, if he is the exact same Prince from the original Little Mermaid? He may be in for a lot of hurt, would it be worth jeopardizing his life in the sea?

MudBox Test

A MB2009 test bust. It's been a worthwhile trial while I sat around feeling sorry for myself, full of snot-bugs. I didn't use any reference for this, but the result kind of reminds me of a cross between Dirty Harry and Herr Starr from Preacher. Notes about MB2009:

It doesn't have a renderer, thankfully it's got pretty good on-screen display functions so screen caps are okay and will have to do. I tried a render in Maya and couldn't be bothered waiting - this bust alone was 2051728 poly! Despite this it ran very well, no lag.
You can't duplicate meshes. Had to export one eye and re-import it just to duplicate!
No great posing tools - it's expected that you'll be using Maya again of course, but I can see that it's not going to compete well against Zbrush without it.
Exporting normal and occlusion maps seems simple enough - not tested though.
Tools are limited, again compared to Zbrush, but do the job.
Layout in MB is a billion times easier to understand then Zbrush - I got started straight away, instead of staring at the screen like a gump when I first looked at the Z.
Sculpting eyes is murder.

I had planned to do a background but really couldn't get anything to work with the colours. If anyone knows of any good books or online resources that teach basic colour theory let me know - this challenge reminded me just how much I don't know about colour palettes and the like.

Thanks to everyone who uploaded their work for the first art challenge! I really enjoyed seeing what came in. The thinking behind the challenge came from EA's Visceral Games who are devolping a game based on Inferno, from the Divine Comedy ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Divine_Comedy ). What classic is now safe from game designers? ;)

~Art Challenge #2~
Take a look at the previous post on using children's scribbles as a shape for a creature. Try it yourself ... if you don't have a child handy, do your own scribbles but do them fast and don't think much of what you're doing otherwise you'll defeat the purpose of the challenge. Submissions should include both scribble and finished work.

Ophelia Twist | the artful dodger

Ophelia Twist, orphan female 13 years, was sentenced by His Magesty's court to be transported to the Lunar Colony of Van Daemon's Convict Settlement, for the term of her natural life, to be hastily sent forth-width via Aerial Ballonsphere, for the wretched crime of theft (Bread Loaf & sundry).

This is a story idea that's been kicking around my head and some of my sketchbooks. Essentially a sci-fi-steam-punked version of Oliver Twist, a young Ophelia is trained by Fagan, Master Thief, in the arts of pickpocket, acrobatics and lockpicking. Her escapades bring her and her thief clan into conflict with the cold-hearted Governor-General and troops of the moon-colony. The little fury guy is a rat-weasel, vermin trained as familiars who squeeze through tight holes to poach keys, etc. The penal colony itself is a warren of over-built walkways, wooden houses and smoke belching factories. The elite of the colony live on balloon-floating, upper platforms.

Would also make for a cool game!
